How Solar Works
Solar-electric, or photo-voltaic (PV) power produces clean, reliable electricity directly from sunlight without consuming fossil fuels. Essentially, solar panels (modules) made of silicon are usually placed on a rooftop to absorb photons of sunlight, knocking electrons loose. The freed electrons are then forced to flow through wires, producing direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts the DC power into alternating current (AC), the standard electrical current.
